'The Course Designer's job is a most important one, on which the success / failure of the show relies upon.'

What it says in the 'Rule Book'

Article 264.1 Course Designer & Starter

The Course Designer must be a member for the current year and of the appropriate level of the SJAI panel of Course Designers.

He is responsible for designing the course, supervising the building of the obstacles, including the practice obstacles and measuring the course.

The Course Designer's aim is to produce courses which will consist of well built obstacles suited to the grade of horse / pony for which they are intended, and to the type of competition stated in the schedule.

To achieve this objective the Course Designer has many things to consider:

Every Course should suit: He has a responsibility towards:
The level of the show The horses
The type of class The Riders
Level of horses and riders at the show The spectators
The size of the arena The sponsors
The weather conditions and jumping surface The continuity of the sport
The time schedule for the arena that day

The Course Designer is therefore the one person solely responsible for the quality, standard, requirement profile, fairness and originality of every single jumping competition, and is expected to demonstrate a high degree of creativity while also safeguarding the sport's traditions and fair play.  In addition to a thorough knowledge of the sport, this involves an understanding of aesthetics, ethics, history, culture and, in the best cases, even art.
